Doncaster: The Best Place in the UK for a Pint?
Doncaster was this year named as the best place in Britain for a decent pint; see Doncaster Free Press article (click highlight). That is certainly some reputation to live up to, so I look forward to putting it to the test.
A friend of mine, Spike, who moderates on the 262 site, is a big Donny fan and he recommends the following pubs as being well worth a visit:
The Cask Corner Dive Bar; a highly unusual bar with the oddest decoration adorning the walls and ceiling; a totally crazy place that’s worth a visit.
The Tut N Shive in West Laith Gate; this pub stocks a good range of well-kept ales and food at very reasonable prices. As ever, Trip Advisor is so helpful with their reviews; I certainly contribute reviews to their site.
The Salutation: a very good range of ales and voted the best bar in Doncaster. A little bit of history with Doncaster Rovers and the Salutation: Back in the days of Doncaster being the centre of the coal mining industry, a few fellas were having a few pints in the Salutation. After one or three too many, an idea emerged about getting together to have a game of football with the local deaf and dumb school, to help raise some funds for them: from this discussion came the birth of Doncaster Rovers. In the early days of the club, the Salutation was used as Doncaster Rovers changing rooms. Again thanks to Spike for providing that lovely bit of history.
This story is fully documented and Donny Rovers still have links with and help that same deaf and dumb school.
Back to beer, if that’s not enough, then have a look at the very decent review again by the Doncaster Free Press; Are these the seven best pubs in Doncaster town centre? Note all three pubs mentioned here are included in the 7 pubs review.
