Enjoying an ale in exeter
Exeter St James park is a really old ground with not the best away end as its has a gently sloping incline meaning the view is just not the greatest. The stand allocated for away supporters is now opposite the old away stand and to be fair, it is a really a decent stand with enough leg room and a very good view of the pitch eve if a giant is sitting in front of you. For travelling supporters I would definitely recommend purchasing a seat as the view is both uninterrupted and good plus it is not always sunny and dry in the football season in the South West.
Let’s return to talk about pubs for a pre-match beer:
Close to the ground is the is the newly refurbished St Anne’s Well which before closure for extensive refurbishment was called the Wells Tavern. I visited the St Anne's Well on 5/11/2016 and can report it is really looking a nice pub these days after it's £135k refurbishment: close to the ground plenty of nice real ales on offer and worth a visit.
If you have more time on your hands then an Exeter city mate of mine recommends the Ship Inn In the city centre, about a 15-minute walk from the ground. I will have to that one a try.
But maybe I am saving the best till last as on my 5/11/2016 visit to St James Park: the absolutely superb Centre Spot Club home of the Exeter Supporters club. They have two bars in the club: the first on your right hand side as you enter the cub sells all the usual bar offerings and on the left, tucked around the corner, is the superb real ale bar. Simply an outstanding effort by a group of CAMRA volunteers who man Exeter City Real Ale & Cider Emporium; just brilliant, well done guys. Imagine two bars in the room, one serving all the usual offerings and one totally dedicated to real ale with three quality locally brewed ales on offer drawn straight from the barrel and a selection of local cider. I certainly know where I am heading in three weeks time: well-done guys, what a brilliant effort by a group of four volunteer CAMRA dudes.
